August Spotlight Athlete: Kaitlyn Romero
For those of you who know Jimmy Corbett, he’s the reason I started coming to Strongpoint CrossFit. My mom was doing some grocery shopping at Publix, post-workout, and Jimmy asked my mom if she had ever tried CrossFit. My mom had been wanting to try it and saw this as a great opportunity for the both of us. She was able to convince me to try CrossFit and she took me during my Spring break last year. I was extremely nervous because I never really worked out before in a gym setting, and my perception of working out was a great amount of running because that’s all coaches want from soccer players. Walking up that first day, I’m pretty sure Ryan could see I did not want to be there, mostly because I was scared and did not know what I was getting into. After that first seven minute workout he had us do, I was hooked. I could see that CrossFit involved a lot of different movements, and that it could help me a great deal with soccer. One of the first things Ryan told me was that he could not make me a better soccer player, but that he could make me a better athlete. He has lived up to that promise. My teammates have commented on an improvement in my performance, and I can thank CrossFit for that. I see myself continuing with CrossFit for the rest of my life, and within the next year or so, entering a competition.
1. What is your favorite WOD?
My favorite WOD would have to be anything with a bunch of squats or cleans.
2. What is your least favorite WOD? Chelsea. That is all.
3. What motivates you to show up and perform day-after-day?
One of my favorite things about our box is the community of people that we have. I enjoy coming every day to workout, but it is a plus that the people who come to Strongpoint are all motivating and positive.
4. What negative thoughts hold you back from being your best?
I don’t always give myself enough credit. When I see a workout with a bunch of running or a high rep scheme, I start to freak out sometimes because I can’t imagine getting through the whole thing.
5. What has been your most memorable moment at Strongpoint CrossFit?
Hmm… I guess getting up the rope for the first time. I had been going to the box for a couple of months at the time, and it was reassuring that I was able to get up the rope because it showed I was progressing as an athlete.
6. What has been your least favorite moment at Strongpoint CrossFit?
My least favorite moment was having to take a good 2-3 month break from CrossFit because of my schedule with soccer. I had CrossFit withdrawals.
7. What is your favorite quote from Strongpoint CrossFit?
“Why don’t we dance more in crossfit?” –Devon
8. What do you want to accomplish with your training in the next year?
In the next year I would like to string at least 50 DUBS in a row and have a dead-hang pull-up. Hopefully I can accomplish the two before the end of 2013.
Coaches Notes: Kaitlyn is now one of our longest-standing members having been with us since the spring of 2012. While she has always had a great attitude, we have seen marked improvements in her strength, metabolic conditioning, and overall athleticism since joining Strongpoint. Her hard work paid off in the spring of this year while serving as the Mandarin High School Lady Mustang’s soccer team’s goalie. She was able to help the team to a District Championship and two regional victories on the way to a top 16 finish in the state. She also earned All-Conference 1st Team and Florida State All-Academic Team honors along the way. Additionally, Kaitlyn gets along with everyone in the gym and seems to go out of her way to make new members feel welcome. It is for these reasons that we are proud to recognize Kaitlyn as out spotlight athlete for August.
