July 2015 Spotlight Athlete: Brittany Perry
What made you decide to start CrossFit?
Matt had been going to a box back home for about 6 months and he loved it. I still wasn’t sure what it was all about or if I wanted to try it, so he told me to watch the games on TV. When I watched them, it looked like so much fun! So when he moved to Jacksonville, for school, we decided to find a box here.
What results have you seen or goals have you achieved?
I’ve improved in just about everything. I have gotten so much stronger, and I feel more in shape than when I was just doing my boring cardio/running routine. I am most proud of the fact that I couldn’t do a single pull up when I came in to do baseline, and now I do most workouts with pull ups in them Rx.
What do you like best about the gym?
The people. I love how everybody cheers for each other and helps one another. You don’t find very many communities where the person in last (which is often me), gets that much support.
What is your favorite exercise or WOD?
Pull ups! I love them. Any WOD with pull ups is fun to me. I also really like Tabatas.
What is your least favorite exercise or WOD?
Wall balls. There is nothing fun about 14 lbs. hitting me in the face repeatedly.
What motivates you to show up day after day?
I love that I feel so much stronger and more capable, not only at the gym but in my every day routine. I work with kids with special needs, and sometimes they require a lot of transport. It isn’t nearly as difficult to pick up a 150 lb. kid as it used to be.
What negative thoughts hold you back from being your best?
I always decide in my head how I am going to break up the workout. A lot of the time, I think underestimate myself. If I am not 100% sure that I can do something, I won’t try it. Or, even if I do try it, I have basically already told myself, “It’s okay if you don’t get it, because you probably won’t,” instead of trying to pump myself up.
What has been your most memorable moment at Strongpoint CrossFit?
The first time I did a workout Rx. I think it was the first time that I noticed how much progress I had made.
What has been your least favorite moment at Strongpoint CrossFit?
I’m not sure if it happened at Strongpoint or during my training for the River Run, but last year I tore my ACL. I was really worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep working out like I had been.
What’s one thing that no one at the gym knows about you?
I am the queen of arts and crafts. I love to knit and paint. I have refurbished just about every piece of furniture in our house.
What is your favorite quote from Strongpoint CrossFit?
When Ryan was trying to pump everyone up for Rep Your Box and yelling, “F%#k shit up!”
What do you want to accomplish with your training in the next year?
I hope to get stronger all around. I plan to compete in a couple more competitions. I also really want to get a muscle up!
What advice would you give to someone who just started out?
Get out of your own head. You can do it! Don’t get discouraged if you really suck at the beginning, I couldn’t even jump rope when I started.
What advice would give to someone who was on the fence about starting?
You aren’t making any progress sitting there contemplating it. Just come try it. I don’t think you can fully understand until you’ve done that first WOD and are laying on the floor thinking, “I can’t believe I just did that!”
Coach’s Comments: Brittany started out with us early in 2014 and to be honest, I really didn’t think she was going to stick with it. She struggled with upper body strength, had a hard time with squat mobility, and as she stated, really couldn’t even jump rope. She just kept showing up and the strangest thing happened… she improved in every single area that I just mentioned! Her consistency, positive attitude, and hard work has paid off in numerous ways as she mentioned, but above all, she is much more confident in her skills and abilities. She has competed at Festivus twice, participated at Rep Your Box 4 this year and demonstrated significant improvement at each event. Brittany also managed to balance her training with the last year-and-a-half of her Master’s degree, work, and now planning a wedding. Her can-do attitude is infectious and she is dangerously close to getting that elusive muscle up! We look forward to working with her in the future and helping her continue to unlock her potential!
