November 2015 Spotlight Athlete: Erika Eddins
What made you decide to start CrossFit? Mike and I were bored with working out at the “gym”. We were unhappy with the weight we had put on since getting married. We were referred to Strongpoint by a friend. Mike went in for a consultation. When he came home and told me what he had done I thought it sounded like “fun”. He told me what his time was and all of the sudden this overwhelming power of competitiveness came over me. That’s where it all started.
What results have you seen or goals have you achieved? I am genuinely a happier person.
What do you like best about the gym? I love the friendships I am creating.
What is your favorite exercise or WOD? Wall Balls!
What is your least favorite exercise or WOD? SNATCH!
What motivates you to show up day after day? The results I see both mentally and physically.
What negative thoughts hold you back from being your best? Thinking that I can’t do something.
What has been your most memorable moment at Strongpoint CrossFit? Competing in Festivus is at the top. Making it up the rope the first time is up there too.
What has been your least favorite moment at Strongpoint CrossFit? Tying for 9th place in Festivus was not a good feeling. The experience did teach me that I really don’t like to be last.
What’s one thing that no one at the gym knows about you? When I was 17 I had an audition for the Jacksonville Ballet but I blew it off to go to a party. #LIFECHOICES
What is your favorite quote from Strongpoint CrossFit? “Stop being a tittie baby.” –Anonymous
What do you want to accomplish with your training in the next year? I would like to have a little more endurance. Maybe run a 5K.
What advice would you give to someone who just started out? Make CrossFit a part of your routine. You are going to be sore and you’re going to want to give up, Fight through it!
What advice would give to someone who was on the fence about starting? CrossFit will make you an all around stronger person. If you never try it you’ll never know if you like it!
Coach’s Comments: I still remember my first interaction with Erika. She called me to ask a few questions about the gym and her husband, Mike, was in the background telling her what to ask me. This went on for a bit before Mike finally took the phone and somehow ended up scheduling himself for an introduction instead of her… Erika did make it in for her own intro within about a month and we have seen dramatic improvements in her movement quality, strength and abilities since that time. She had a short break last winter for knee surgery and got right back on the horse as soon as she was cleared to participate again. Since then, Erika has participated in one Master’s Fitness League online challenge and just did her first in-person competition in October at the Festivus Games. She has become one of our most consistent and hardworking members and we are looking forward to seeing her continue to progress in the future!
